a very fine wood sailor worked marine walking cane

Ref : 16700

An interesting and most unsual fine quality wood sailor worked marine walking cane, with typical spiral and chequered carving, the upper section with alternating tall strips of tortoiseshell and marine ivory inlays on an octagonal section, the handle finished as a turned and shaped marine ivory knop. This is an rare example of a sailor work cane, this type often considerred to be an apprentice or junior piece, being carved mainly from wood rather than a section of whale jaw bone. However, this example is of such superior quality that it can only have been designed and carved by a superior workman sailor, and is therefore not commonn to see this level of skill employed on such a cane.
